Dick’s Picks of Dick Pics We used in 2024
This was supposed to be my 24 favorite photos from 2024, but it has since turned into more of a "used here last year” in review. I bet it’s more than 24 photos, too. I even failed to keep it strictly to artists as requested.
Honestly, it’s hard to believe In Spite Magazine puts up with my horseshit.

In January, I met the most charming and handsome member of the Sex Pistols, Glen Matlock, at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, California. Read what he had to say to his ex-bandmate, John "Rotten" Lydon, in his interview. You can see him on a world tour now with the Sex Pistols.
This photo was released for the first time in February. Although it was taken almost ten years ago, it is of composer Peter Vukmirovic Stevens and poet Penny Rimbaud at Dial House as they discussed the early works of Franz Liszt. It was used for the article by R.L. Rage.
In April, this photo of Bob Vylan from the Rebellion Festival 2023 was featured in the first-ever Super Fan Tales from the Rail article written by the incomparable Didymus Holmes. The piece was very well received but also managed to ruffle some feathers—much like the real Bob Vylan.
The article's title might have had something to do with it, as it was taken directly from the band’s song lyrics: "Are You With Them? Are You With Us? Pick a Side."

Also in April, the photo below of Carol Hodge (shot in Philadelphia in 2023) along with the photo below it of Steve Ignorant (shot in Los Angeles in 2018) were used in a preview, which marked the last U.S. tour of the Steve Ignorant Band. For the foreseeable future, you can catch them around the UK and at this year's Rebellion Festivals.
The article was named by a Facebook fan: DO THEY OWE USA LIVING?

In May, I went to Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas. Before the scheduled day’s events, I had a wonderful chat about the ins and outs of touring the US and beyond with Dick Lucas of Subhumans at the Golden Nugget. He drank all my coffee.
Don’t miss Subhumans on tour now and watch for more Dick On Dick interviews in 2025.

A few highlights stood out to me from this year's Punk Rock Bowling coverage, starting with The Twins. Their charm and photogenic style made them the stars of much of my PRB coverage. This photo is from the article, PUNK ROCK BOWLING IS A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT. DAY ONE, PART ONE

Then on day two, Arrow de Wilde of Starcrawler and Dick Lucas turned into vampires at Punk Rock Bowling. It is a festival that never disappoints. Punk Rock Bowling Day Two

Many articles on Punk Rock Bowling came out in July. The below image features Snugs of Madness, was featured in the second Super Fan Tales from the Rail article, written by the gifted and enchanting Vanessa Klauser Hildebrand: One Step Beyond - A Normal Review of Madness at PRB
Also in July, this review of our brothers in Black and Green, the Knuckleheadz Band’s Punk Rock Bowling Club show with N8NOFACE and Codefendants. It was easily one of the best shows of the year. Be sure to read the review! N8NOFACE, CODEFENDANTS AND THE KNUCKLEHEADZ DO VEGAS

Also in July, the Mosswood Meltdown Day One review was released. Mosswood is a festival with a unique, family-like vibe—though it’s a bit like the Manson Family. It’s one of my favorite gatherings, with its DIY community-first credo and unapologetic "fuck 'em if they can’t take a joke" attitude. It’s always a spectacular event. Mosswood, I love you. Please give the review a read!

July is also when the last of the Rebellion previews go out. A favorite of mine is the full photo of the little genius who kicked off our marketing campaign by being the first to hold up the sticker. This moment inspired the first series of FREE mini-trading cards, available from our correspondents in the field and participating sponsors like Vinyl Solution HB and Factory Records.

This photo was taken at Rebellion 2023 and later featured in a preview article. There’s not much to read in the article, but the collection of photos is definitely worth a look!

In August, the Rebellion coverage begins again and continues through next July. Here are a few photos from different articles. It was a spectacular Rebellion as always, I’ve never regretted going—only not going. If you're a Yank, start planning now! The first three shots were taken from the first article to come out: Rebellion Against Bigots
The image below was copied and used so often that when I came across the gentleman in the photo online, he had no idea where it originally came from. A friend sent it to him after finding it elsewhere with the watermark cropped out. It was even posted on a few questionable news sites, often with no credit or, worse, credited to someone else entirely. This happens a lot, especially with Band and Artist Photos

I think I can speak for most artists—we appreciate it when you share our work, but we’d prefer to be credited and that you didn’t credit it to "who cares" or, worse, yourself or someone else. Personally, I feel the photo belongs to both the subject and me. Other photographers disagree and even try to charge bands or regular people to use their own images. I do not, but that’s an argument for another day.

So if you run a less-than-reliable site, please just ask if you can use the photo first—I might say yes. Hell, I might even offer to provide photos for your wonky-ass website regularly, like I did with this one. But please, if I do collaborate or give permission to use photos once and you want to use them again for something else, please ask me again. It’s just common courtesy.

It turns out Rebellion Festival can be thirsty work, so my brothers in Black and Green, the Knuckleheadz Band and I enjoyed a delightful spot of afternoon tea with the lovely and talented Carol Hodge of the Steve Ignorant Band and the talented One Man Underground. Some of my favorite photos from the year and maybe of all time can be seen in Sipping Tea with Carol Hodge and the KNUCKLEHEADZ

Also in August, I had run into Ralph Champagne (AKA Blag Dahlia), the ever-charismatic man-about-town and lead singer of the Dwarves, at Mosswood Meltdown. This photo appeared in his Rebellion Spotlight interview/review, where he passionately discussed his enduring love for cocaine. The promo reel for the article has been reported to Meta three times.
As of this writing, I can now confirm—after several recounts—that Blag was officially voted In Spite Magazine’s Celebrity Punk Hunk of December 2024. This honor makes him eligible for the coveted title of Celebrity Punk of the Year. Read Blag of the Dwarves Rebellion Spotlight Interview On The Spot at Mosswood Meltdown

This photo of Andy Scott of The Sweet was also featured in two articles, which is fitting given that one of them discusses the fact that there are currently two bands performing under the name "Sweet" and playing the same songs. Interestingly, both 1MU and I have seen both versions of the band.

In September, this 2017 photo was featured in a preview article for Gee Vaucher’s series of events in New York City. The series included an art exhibition, a film screening, and a captivating performance by Penny Rimbaud and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock—one of the standout performances I experienced in 2024. September 7th marked Baltimore's annual Rage Fest, hosted by Duck Myers. This event continues to grow each year, showcasing the best hip-hop, rap, and crossover acts from Baltimore, D.C., and Virginia. Below is a shot of rapper 90 Wyse at Rage Fest.

September 12th marked Bikini Kill’s final show, held at the Baltimore Soundstage. I had the privilege of covering this historic night for In Spite Magazine. Included are two images from the event—the second features a mother with her two daughters, who spent the entire show rocking out and singing along from the rail. After the show, I asked the women, Who is the biggest Bikini Kill fan? and they all said themselves.

October marked the end of NOFX. There are a few articles that came out about the Punk In Drublic Festival, along with more than a few covering their final tour. The photo below is from Kim Moenich’s first appearance writing for In Spite Magazine: The Woman with the NOFX Tattoo

If there’s one photo I love to take, it’s of crowd surfers—and I captured more than a few at Punk In Drublic. The image below, from the Subhumans' set, was featured in Paul Rotzler’s debut article for In Spite Magazine: Subhumans at NOFX’s Farewell Punk in Drublic Concert

In December, this photo of Dirt Box Disco was featured in Lorraine Carter's first article for In Spite Magazine, where she wrote about her band, Post Mortem, reuniting and playing their first show in thirty years: Both sides of the Stage at Punk and Disorderly Skegness
I thought it would be fun to end by trying this again—this is the first photo ever censored by In Spite Magazine. Taken outside the Rebellion Festivals a few years ago, it has been repeatedly removed from different articles, and I keep putting it back in.
