Rebellion Kids
Believe it or not, most people in the U.S. are unaware of the Rebellion Festivals. Even within the punk community, I receive at least one message a week asking, “Why haven’t I heard of this?” The most frequent questions I get about Rebellion, though, are about kids: “Is the festival as kid-friendly as you say?” “Is it okay to bring an infant?” “Are there other things for families to do in Blackpool?” and “How much is admission for children?” I address these questions in almost every Rebellion-related article I write, but I will answer them again.
Along with a bunch of newly released punk is dad photos and some classic shots that I feel are worth another look,
kids under 12 are free and yes, the kids all love it.
Blackpool is not only home to the Rebellion Festivals; it is what the Brits call a seaside resort town. This means there is, of course, a beach and a host of other activities and attractions, such as amusement parks with roller coasters, piers for strolling, and countless unwise dietary options. Think of carnival-style food: fried Oreos, ice cream, donuts, and the quintessential fish and chips. to name a few.
It is a great place to take the kids or grandkids for a long weekend of fun they will never forget.
The first time I heard about the Rebellion festivals was from gardener extraordinaire and world-renowned artist Gee Vaucher. I have been working on a photo series for almost 20 years called Punk Is Dad. It started way back in the Stone Age, back when we had a paper internet. at the now-defunct OC Weekly, Gee suggested that I go to Rebellion because she thought there were a lot of punk families there that I might want to include in the project.
Gee was right. Rebellion is a true family affair, with loads of happy kids, parents, and grandparents all enjoying themselves and making those cherished childhood memories that kids deserve. Some may find it odd that punk rock has become such a wholesome family activity, but from my experience, punk families are the most loving and produce smart, amazing children who grow into remarkable adults.
I think the reason is that punk parents are more patient and let kids express themselves freely without judgment. At the same time, they are difficult to deceive and don't tolerate nonsense, making them, in my opinion, the best parents a kid could have.
By the time this article is published, this year’s Rebellion Festival may be sold out. Check their website; they might have day passes available. Otherwise, you can start planning for next year—early bird tickets go on sale pretty quickly after the festival ends.
If you're still not convinced that taking the kids to the Rebellion Festivals is a great idea, let me introduce little Penelope, our young princess of Rebellion. She can be seen enjoying sets from Citizen Fish, The Steve Ignorant Band, and Paranoid Visions—all while making friends and having a grand time.
I hope you enjoyed the photos, and I would like to thank all the punk families who let me document their Rebellion experience. I’ll leave you with a few more of my favorite shots from various years. I bet all these little buggers are a lot bigger now.
see you in blackpool
