Penny and Gee In NYC
Starting on September 12th, White Columns in New York City will kick off a remarkable series of events featuring the influential visual artist Gee Vaucher and visionary poet and musician Penny Rimbaud. Best known for their work with the anarcho-punk collective CRASS, Vaucher and Rimbaud have long been at the forefront of blending art with activism. This event series will span multiple venues across the city, offering rare opportunities to engage with their powerful and provocative work from groundbreaking visual art to live performances and thought-provoking discussions.
Kicking off the events is Gee Vaucher’s major exhibition at White Columns Gallery, which opens on September 12 and runs through October 26, 2024. This exhibition marks Vaucher’s largest showing in the United States, offering a deep dive into her socially and politically charged artwork. As part of the opening, the gallery will also host the U.S. launch of the newly released book Crass - A Pictorial History. The book captures the legacy of the anarcho-punk movement through a collection of photos, posters, and artwork.
On September 14, Penny Rimbaud, joined by saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, will perform ARTHUR RIMBAUD IN VERDUN at Artists Space. This unique collaboration will blend spoken word and jazz, offering a dynamic exploration of sound and expression.
In Penny Rimbaud's imaginative vision, the French poet Arthur Rimbaud—who died in 1891—somehow lives on to witness the historic and tragic Battle of Verdun in 1916. This concept explores how the young poet, known for his rebellious spirit and visionary writings, might perceive such a catastrophic event. Through the eyes of a vagabond who once wandered through life with intense passion and disdain for conventional norms, the horrors of war take on a deeply personal and surreal dimension.
Rounding out the week, Anthology Film Archives will screen Vaucher’s Semi Detached - CRASS Video Collages 1978–1984 on September 16. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with both Vaucher and Rimbaud, giving attendees an opportunity to connect directly with the artists.
All events are FREE and open to the public: this is a must-attend series for those interested in the intersection of art and activism. Whether you're familiar with their work or discovering it for the first time, this is a phenomenal opportunity to experience the creative world of Gee Vaucher and Penny Rimbaud.
