One Man Underground’s favourite gig photos of 2024

DISCLAIMER: Look. If I wanted to write listicles, I'd write for Buzzfeed. (They’d never hire you - Ed.) But when my editor asked for my ten favourite gig photos of 2024, what could I say? You've got to do what the boss tells you to do. So with that in mind, I trawled through my phone to find a few snaps that didn't look too terrible. Some of them you might have already seen in other articles; some come from my top ten gigs of 2024; some come from both. All could be improved by using a DSLR instead of a Google Pixel 6. They appear in alphabetical order, with more info beneath the gallery. With those caveats aside, enjoy…

Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Hot Box, Chelmsford, May 2024
As “noodle god” Higashi Hiroshi looks on, “speed guru” Kawabata Makoto lifts his guitar to the sky during a psychedelic space-rock extravaganza.

Bikini Kill
Melkweg, Amsterdam, June 2024
Righteous fury at the patriarchy never sounded so fun. Kathleen Hanna addresses the Dutch audience, in front of Julie Ruin-colleague Sara Landeau.

Bog Log III
The Cluny, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, May 2024
Tuscon, Arizona's finest exponent of Dadaist electro blues punk is close to being upstaged by a giant rubber duck filled with Buck's Fizz.

Ceephax Acid Crew
Hot Box, Chelmsford, February 2024
A homecoming performance from the electronic producer, running back and forth along a bank of vintage and, in some cases, extremely rare synthesisers.

The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown
Arts Centre, Colchester, April 2024
57 years later, the man from Lewes is still a fiery force to be reckoned with. Read my full review here.

Deaf Devils
Winter Gardens, Blackpool, August 2024
An electrifying performance from the Spanish punk up-and-comers that came to an abrupt end… watch this space for further insight.

John Otway
The Prince Of Wales, Stow Maries, August 2024
47 years after 'Cor Baby That's Really Free', the man known as "Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure" is still, happily, a genius.

Jon Spencer
Olso, Hackney, September 2024
During a fantastic retrospective performance, the man from Pussy Galore and Heavy Trash turns as blue as the explosion he once fronted.

Keeley Forsyth
ICA, London, May 2024
A stunning, theatrical performance from the Oldham actor-cum-singer songwriter, captured in monochrome because I couldn't not. Read my full review here.

Lonnie Holley
Music Hall, Ramsgate, August 2024
In the UK to support a retrospective exhibition in Camden, the Birmingham, Alabama artist and sculptor brings a lifetime of trauma and wisdom to his late-period musical career.
